Streetnoise GTStereo   Letter

Terrorists Destroy Dewey Decimal System Speaking of terrorism, everyone remembers where she was when Napster was assaulted. It was chilling.

So I was surprised to discover that our local library lends CDs. Not songs, entire discs you can take home and do whatever you want with. I asked if five was too many.

The librarian said fifteen was the limit. "Fifteen?" I exclaimed! "Who would borrow fifteen CDs?"

"You'd be surprised," she replied, not knowing I was already surprised. "They get a whole stack, burn them and bring them back the next day." [Burn is techie slang for copying.]

Okay. Public libraries used to have records for loan, which never appealed to me, at least after seeing how many ways records could be abused. But compact discs? You can digitally copy an entire album, plus the artwork. A lot better than some lame Internet download.

This service should be the recording industry's first target. Is it possible they realise that persuing libraries's far more outrageous free service would be a public relations disaster?

Nah!
